Drive Electric Day - the first Saturday in October

DRIVE ELECTRIC DAY - The first Saturday in October each year - A reminder of what it is about:

For numerous reasons, there is growing interest in electric vehicles. Drive Electric Day celebrates this trend, and allows those who have roadworthy electric vehicles to share with the world how great they are; everything from pedal-assisted electric bicycles, hybrid electric cars, to electric vans.

The idea behind “Drive Electric Day” is to get as many battery-powered vehicles on the road simultaneously as we can. We’re encouraging everyone in the UK to get their battery vehicle on the road, somewhere, between 11.30am and 12 noon (at least), and if possible with a big sign in the window saying “I’m an electric vehicle”.

Maybe meet up with some friends at 11ish, in the car park of your local EV-friendly pub or shopping centre, have a bit of a drive out from there at 11.30am, and return there at 12noon for lunch, while you re-charge.

It’s not a formal road-run or anything, but getting as many electric vehicles as we can on the road at the same time is a fun way to raise awareness of battery vehicles, and encourage local businesses (shopping centres, pubs, or wherever) to offer charging facilities.

The event is supported by various members of the Battery Vehicle Society. So maybe get in touch with your local Battery Vehicle Society contact (http://www.BatteryVehicleSociety.org.uk) for advice on arranging a meet-up perhaps, organise something yourself for people in your area, or just get on the road on your own and drive around on the day.

Please join this comunity and make a post to it (or just comment here) to say where you'll be and what you'll be driving, or doing, to support us, on 3rd October 2009.

Drive Electric Day - the first Saturday in October
Hello there,

The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), which is in Manchester, is supporting Drive Electric Day by giving you free parking if you drive to the Museum in your electric vehicle this Saturday. Just let the gatehouse know when you pull up that you're driving an electric vehicle. Unlike the last gathering at the museum, we are unfortunately unable to offer you a charging point. If the situation changes, I'll let you know.

Have a lovely day out and about!

Best wishes,

Drive Electric Day - the first Saturday in October

Right, I'd love to point out that I have a Tesla, but i can't. 'Cos I don't. what I DO have is a bunch of moulds and a lead to some wheelchair motors, so...
Electric! Dalek!  is born.
Or at least gestating. I have been building daleks for about 18 years on and off but not done one with electric motors in so far, so this will be a first. I have some parts in stock but construction begins next Tuesday  - perhaps we can use it/him/her as a sort of BVS Mascot.
With that in mind, I invite suggestions of names for the mutant Skarosian.
I might even find a prize for the best one, but don't hold your breath :-)

Getting the ball rolling... [Sep. 18th, 2008|11:53 am]
Drive Electric Day - the first Saturday in October

On Drive Electrc Day 2008, I shall be on the road in a Berlingo Electrique, which is a lovely electric van made by Citroen.

It does about 60 miles on a single charge, and we tend to charge it up overnight by running the lead into the house and plugging it in to a standard socket.  It will happily travel on the motorway, with a top speed of about 70mph, so we have no problem cruising along in the left-hand or middle lane.  It has loads of room in the back, for cargo/children, and we love it.

So, if you are in the Altrincham/Cheshire area on Sat 4th October this year, look out for a white van on the roads with me in it.  We'll be setting out from the Romper pub at 11.30am, returning around 12noonish for lunch.  And we have got the pub's agreement to offer charging facilities.

This trip is part of a north-west social meet-up I am organising.  Everyone welome:

Best wishes to everyone else who will be out and about that day!

Community Rules [Sep. 18th, 2008|11:39 am]
Drive Electric Day - the first Saturday in October

This first post is to establish a few guidelines.  Scroll up to read the recent posts to the community, starting with the most recent at the top.

1.  I don't really believe in rules, I believe in trusting people to 'play nice'.  But, if you abuse that trust, your offending post will be removed without warning.  If you abuse it again, you will be removed, without warning.  So, play nice!

2.  The original purpose of this community was to allow people to post to say What, When and Where they will be driving on the first Saturday of each October, and for others to respond to their posts with encouraging comments.
Please see the Community Info page here:  http://community.livejournal.com/drive_electric/profile

3.  However, communities are organic and as such I imagine the nature of this community will develop.  I ask only that posts to the community remain relevant to the general theme of electric vehicles: so, they should be about Drive Electric Day, or, between times, have some connection with electric vehicles.

4.  I have no problem with posts (personal or trade) offering useful info; items for sale like batteries, second-hand vehicles, etc, but only post once, don't spam us with your business.

5.  If you are organising some kind of electric vehicle event please feel free to post details here.  Be aware that I may well pass on anything of interest to members of the Battery Vehicle Society, since I am secretary of that organisation.  Also be aware that I will promote their events here too.

6.  If you are uncertain about anything, feel free to drop me an email before posting.
